Well done to Ashley on winning this unique prize. We’ll be sure to follow the process closely and share the finished product on this here website. Nice one to everyone who entered.

Design your own jacket with Private White V.C.
Just tell us why you should win, in no more than 50 words and this unique opportunity could be yours…
As you may have read in Issue 11 (buy it), Proper Magazine in association with Private White V.C. are offering one lucky bugger the chance to design and manufacture their own one-off jacket, just in time for the weather getting colder.
To enter the Proper Magazine PWVC competition you simply have to tell us why you should win in no more than 50 words.
Use the comments section at the bottom of this page. You can tell us about the jacket you’d make or just tell us why you are the most deserving.
Your ideas
You can design your coat using the most simple or the most advanced technology. In the words of James from Private White, you can draw it on the back of a fag packet or design it using the best available software. The choice is yours.
Submitting your design
Private White are willing to liaise with you on whichever level you deem appropriate. Part of the bounty on offer for the winner is the opportunity to spend an afternoon with their brilliant team of pattern cutters and product developers who will be at your complete disposal to assist you on your design’s construction, fabrication and fit. If you’re not able to visit them, they’re more than willing to converse via the telephone or email, but we strongly suggest you go and see the factory in all its glory, it’s well worth the bus fare.
What they can do
Private White V.C. and the people behind it run their operations from one of the last remaining raincoat factories in the UK. They specialise in top end, highly technical garments and have capabilities you’ll struggle to find elsewhere. They make for royalty, heads of state, as well as some of the most high profile brands in the world, whose products are currently being stocked in many of the shops advertised in Issue 11 of our magazine. It’s probable that you yourself have worn a jacket made by the people behind Private White.
Be assured, they’re at the top of their game and as such, they should have the capability to put your designs into practice, even if your ideas are a bit mental.
What they can’t do
As we’ve said above, they’re ace. They’re brilliant at what they do and can do pretty much anything, short of a jacket capable of brewing up for you. Certain designs are owned exclusively by the brands that make them. So if you want a bright pink version of a CP Mille Miglia or a hooded vest in Fjallraven’s G-1000 fabric you’ll need to modify your design slightly.
Who’s the boss?
Once Proper Magazine has announced the winner of this dead good competition, our hands will be metaphorically washed. And tied, too, probably. Well, we might mither you for a pic of the finished article and maybe ask you a few questions. But what we’re saying is, once you and Private White get your heads together, it’s a two-way thing, not a three-way thing. Three’s a crowd and all that. This isn’t for any other reason than us wanting to keep the process as simple as possible.
We can’t wait to see how it all turns out but we know it’ll be a top story, whatever happens. If you need to find out more, email mark@propermag.com or neil@propermag.com
Competition closes on Wednesday 30th November.

If only to stop my quest for that perfect jacket. Jackets come and go from my wardrobe with alarming frequency.
The perinnial search for a jacket that has a hood but can disappear without having to fully detach it, or stuff it into a collar. I reckon I’ve cracked it.
It’s cold soon. And I need a jacket to match my unique charms ,nobody makes one so looks like we can help each other out, I’m available for the publicity shots after also
I would like to see a jacket that is durable enough to withstand a bitterly cold and windswept tuesday night rumbelows cup tie in yeovil yet remains dapper enough to wear for a night on the tiles. Im thinking a more modern take on the classic harris tweed shooting jacket.
Still on the search for the perfect winter coat. I know exactly what i’m after but sadly it only exists in my head.
One that would last a lifetime and look cool whatever the year. Sounds like Private Whites could be the solution to my problems.
GOT EVERYTHING READY TO GO,STYLE,MATERIALS COTTON & QUARPEL,SHEEPSKIN,FOX FUR.THE REST IS UP TO YOU PRIVATE.
I would like a new coat with a hood.
A handmade coat is the mark and privilege of a gentleman. The English gentleman is ill at ease boasting of his worthiness, so I’ll rely on modesty instead. As a bone-idle underachiever I only hope that wearing the name of Private White might bestow a little greatness onto me.
The gentleman in my life is a coxcomb, a rake and a prancing dandy. He might pretend to exquisite tastes, but left unchecked he risks vulgarity. I hope that with some of my feminine creative input we can keep him on the right side of decent.
The perfect jacket designer must have thorough knowledge in areas such as: the history of men’s clothing (XVIII-XXI), knowledge of subcultures (XX), uniforms of different armies in different years, the (casual) trends of the past 20 years, be able to analyze and predict that will be interesting tomorrow. It is also important to have a good knowledge of materials and have a great imagination. Do you still have doubts who can make that stylish jacket ?
The coat would have to look smart and stylish. Look as good with shoes and trousers as it does with jeans and trainers. Be both water and wind proof. Keep you warm as toast and look great riding a scooter or motorcycle.
Looks like a fantastic factory, with some top quality crafts folk.
Would be great to visit & fantastic to get the ideal jacket from my mind’s eye to my wardrobe.
No need to reinvent the wheel but would take insiration from some of my favourite pieces.
You know when jackets always look better on other people? Well, I want other people to say that about me. ‘Who is that guy in a one-of-a-kind Stone-Dri jacket? Wow! He’s so sophisticated.’ Think of all the glory days to come.
Stone-Dri? Wrong comp mate!
Because I can never really seem to get ahold of a reasonably priced winter jacket. As they fly out of shops as soon as they come in.
I’m jacketless
Another jacket wont harm my addiction, especially if it’s my own. I’d take a maverick approach. It will look superb with specific attention to details down to each feature; thread piece, cut and cloth. Each aspect is vital. Finally, not forgetting substance, it’ll protect me from our Great British weather.
It would be ironic to design a winter jacket in the Australian summer. The bus fare would also be interesting.
Hopefully not too late.
A simple overhead smock design influenced by WW1/WW2 & coupled with some posh school kids influences.
If the jacket looks like anything like it sounds I will be amazed.
Smock Jacket drawings available.
WHOS WON?
Too Late, I know. But I am desperately looking for a replacement for my super versatile 2001 black vest/jacket. The one is slowly getting a bit worn out
Help!
..cos I`m cold, skint, northern and probably too late.
HOW FUCKING SAD
