adidas Spezial: a footwear exhibition from a fans perspective

gsj single FLYER

As exhibitions go, this does indeed look a pretty special/spezial affair, as all round top bloke and adidas ace face Gary Aspden has used his impressive personal collection as the founding blocks for this vintage adi showcase which features some of our beloved German brand’s most coveted pieces alongside a compilation of personal stories and anecdotes compiled by proper adi fans. Or to quote the press release “As adidas has influenced Gary Aspden’s life, so too has it millions around the world. With the earliest product on display harking back to the 60s, Spezial brings to life the brand’s transition over the years from sportswear giant to lifestyle powerhouse – a mainstay in youth culture.”  Featuring never seen before exclusives, as well as signed samples from the likes of Noel Gallagher, Run DMC, NERD, Lily Allen, Ian Brown, Nas, Eminem, Public Enemy and possibly even Glenn Kitson (tbc).  There’s also a limited edition 100-page book to accompany Spezial, featuring sublime images of some of the footwear on show, as well as quotes from influential adidas aficionados – designers, musicians, collectors, fans – including a brief recollection from a well cool magazine editor about his time working at the adidas factory in Stockport back in 1990. There are only 500 of these books going on sale (limited to 2 per person) priced at £20 each and with all proceeds going to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

  1. Any idea where us northern monkeys who live in tents and are scared of going to a big village like London could get a copy of the book.

Is there any plans for the exhibition to tour?

  2. I think you have to go to the exhibition, though maybe tweet @garyaspden to confirm?
