How to Survive in the North (Luke Healy)

HowToSurviveInTheNorth_cover

How to survive in the North? Easy that, all you need is a a bit of Gore-tex, fantastic taste in music, a high pastry/gravy tolerance and a propensity to take the piss out of everything. What’s that? Not that North? Oh yeah,I remember now, it’s a dead good graphic novel all about surviving in the arctic during the early 1900s isn’t it? The book’s thrilling narrative weaves the true life derring do expeditions of Ada Blackjack and Robert Bartlett alongside a contemporary fictional story about a lovelorn lecturer facing his own non-freezing to death/getting eaten by polar bears style challenges. Though the stories make for a compelling read and possess genuine drama, for me the real star of this show are the illustrations that create a symphony of beautifully coloured landscapes filled with intense characters all of whom look like they’ve been kitted out by the lads at Oi Polloi. So OK this book might not help you track down the nearest vegan supermarket in Chorlton or recommend the least lairy B&B in Blackpool to stay in but it will bring back all the joy and excitement of being a kid when reading the adventures of Tintin or helping Action Man traverse the kitchen lino wilderness were what life was all about.
