Being the highly in-demand, globe-trotting, city slicking kind of guy that I am these days, I hopped over to Berlin last week to check out the launch of Smart new two and four seater models. Well actually I flew on a plane but you know what I mean. I mean going to Berlin for me is like crossing the road.No big deal. That’s how big time I am. Anyway enough about me. Having been previously curious about this enigmatic vehicle I’m now something of a convert. You can forget all about those big ostentatious gas guzzling 4x4s from now on Smart cars are where it’s at for getting me around town these days. I mean if there’s enough room in the back for a new jacket and a few days worth of shopping then I’m sorted aren’t I? Unless of course someone invents urban caravan parks, then we’re screwed. They’re not though are they?
Set right in the heart of Berlin the launch itself was an impressive one with head honchos from Smart standing up and telling us all about the various improvements this agile micro car has undergone before the grand reveal where they jumped into one and did loads of donuts on the stage to emphasise their record breaking turning circle (and maybe save a few Euros on stunt men). After that they parked up and a crowd of hungry auto-journos descended upon the stage adjust mirrors and pull down tailgates with gay abandon. I just stood there thinking ‘the Jetsons got it all wrong, we’re not having hovver cars we’re having smart ones‘. As more and more of us gravitate towards city living Smart looks like a genuinely fun and practical solution for when space is at a premium. Safer, roomier and now with the option of two more seats, these eccentric and chic little motors are the way forward. Oh and did I mention the bikes? Smart make bikes too, now I really want one of those as well. Well smart.
