We feel like Puma can’t put a foot, or shoe, wrong at the minute, and the latest news certainly fuels this feeling, as they’ve just announced the return of their iconic Speedcat model.
Sometimes shoes and clothes in general can have crazy names for pretty much no reason whatsoever, but the Speedcat has pedigree to back up its title. When it was first released in 1999 the original Speedcat was modelled on fireproof racing footwear worn by Grand Prix drivers throughout the ’80s and ’90s.
The Speedcat was re-released for the first time in June and has been crowned the ‘It’ shoe of 2024 – we’re not quite sure what that means but we think it’s probably got something to do with that BRAT Summer thing, anyway, now it’s back for round two. This time in autumnal, colourways, well at least one of them is – saying blue’s autumnal might be pushing it a bit. The latest iteration of the Speedcat comes in a plush suede that features the very same iconic low-profile design as the original 1999 model did.
That suede upper sits upon a black rubber sole unit that is supposedly modelled on F1 racing tyres, we’re not scientists, but by that logic, this should add around 3mph to your top sprinting speed when wearing them. If Puma wants to send us a pair of these we’re happy to test this theory.
Embroidered Puma branding sits on the toe, side panel and tongue, alongside a large version of that iconic Puma swoosh thing up the side of the shoe. Just Googled it, and apparently, that’s called a ‘Formstrip.’
The imagery for the campaign has been shot in some dessert-looking-area, with the shoes being modelled by Stylist Sierra Rena, there’s also a few motorbikes in the background, because, you know, racing.
If this release gets your engine started, the Speedcat is set to launch on Saturday, 19th October 2024, from PUMA.com, END., SNS, and other retailers.
