Oakley has got to have had one of the best brand turnarounds in the last couple of decades, Not in the terms of what they’ve been producing – because that’s always been excellent. But in terms of how you would’ve only associated them with a battered pair of sunglasses your Dad wears when he’s got to drive over 20 miles. In the modern day though Oakley is rightfully accredited as being one of the most innovative brands of the 21st century.
Plenty more of that innovation can be seen in the latest Fall/Winter 2024 instalment of their famed Japan Collection known as the Field Gear Line or FGL.
Introduced in the early 2000s as part of Oakley’s expansion into tactical and outdoor apparel, the Field Gear line aimed to meet the needs of outdoor enthusiasts, athletes, and military personnel by combining their renowned performance technology with rugged and functional designs.
ThIS Fall/Winter 2024 edition of the Field Gear Line continues the legacy of its Japanese designs for both the streets and outdoors, as well as introducing two new hero pieces – The FGL 3L Refined Coat 1.7, and the FGL Puffer Ins Vest 1.7.
We know those techy names sound like Oakley has somehow incorporated AI into their designs, but don’t worry, they haven’t. At least we don’t think so.
What they have done though is produced some fine tactical, utilitarian, technical, militaristic, (insert other techy words) outerwear, and it looks very good.
Starting with the FGL 3L Refined Coat – if you’ve ever wanted to dress like a Spetsnaz soldier from Call of Duty MW2 Oakley has answered your prayers. The jacket features two large handwarmer pockets, a fully waterproof 3-layer construction, and those Velcro patch things that soldiers use for putting badges on. Obviously, it’s in a military green colour as well.
The FGL Puffer Ins Vest is cut very much from the same cloth as the jacket – but that cloth is filled with insulation. The vest has a pocket, with central Oakley branding on the front and neck, as well as an asymmetrical zip running down the side of it.
Outside of the two hero pieces, there’s an assortment of utilitarian and lifestyle garb that looks straight out of a Mission Impossible film if Tom Cruise had a better dress-sense.
