Six of the Best – Golfing

Last week we did a Six of the Best centred around an activity that we know nothing about, and this week you’ll be happy to hear it’s the same story. This time we’re taking a look at the gear we’d grab if we got invited to go smack balls about a well-groomed and very large garden – yes we’re talking about golf. Our knowledge of golf mainly comes from watching Caddyshack & Happy Gilmore, as well as a handful of holes-in-one on Wii Sports, so we’re probably not all that qualified to tell you about the right sort of garb you should be looking for. With that said, we think we get the essence of the sport – to relax on a lovely day and have a chinwag with your mates. The actual activity seems to be secondary, and that sounds alright to us – kind of like going for a walk and a chat except there’s a whiff of competition.

So if you want our advice on how to stay out of the rough, here’s a selection of the best garb for putting, driving, ironing and wedging.

Gramicci Reversible Fleece Vest

Vests are almost as important in golf as polo shirts, and we’re getting onto that next. This one from Gramicci is reversible, one side being the navy nylon you can see to your left, with the other being a heather grey fleece. Whether you find yourself on the fairway, rough, green or in a bunker, this fleece should be able to handle the conditions that come with each – whatever those are.

Wacko Maria Knit Polo Shirt

One thing that came across loud and clear from Caddyshack was that golfers love patterns, although that film was made in 1980, so maybe they don’t anymore. Anyway, that’s our reasoning for why we’ve gone with this mad polo shirt from Wacko Maria.

BEAMS PLUS Mil Trouser

For an activity that takes place on grass, golfers sure do seem to like a pair of lightly coloured trousers. We’re not sure if it’s the safest option with the possibility of grass stains and all that, but what do we know? Sticking with tradition, here’s a pair of lovely white slacks from BEAMS PLUS, as well as being lightly coloured, they’re nice and broad to allow for full range of motion when swinging your golf stick.

Danton PSG 6 Panel Cap

As far as we know, you can’t play golf indoors yet, so a hat is very important for keeping those harmful UV rays out of your face. This cap is from Danton, and it looks to be the right amount of preppiness without going over the top. A small front logo, something written in a nice font on the side and a green underbill – lovely.

Auralee Super Fine Wool Rib Knit

Golf is something that’s historically associated with the upper echelons of society, and so is knitwear. This knit from Auralee looks super fine and is also made from super fine wool – a fact that is ideal to bring up to your golf colleagues when you’re 15 over par.

Paraboot Thiers Shoe

We’re pretty sure that you wear special golf footwear when indulging in the activity, but we know absolute zilch about that. So we’re putting forward this pair from Paraboot. The Thiers are made from hardwearing suede leather and appear to be fancy enough that they wouldn’t look amiss strolling around a clubhouse, so that’s why they’re our pick.
