Universal Works celebrates 15th anniversary with Bakers Jacket Project

Time seems to fly, doesn’t it?

A lot of people say ‘Time flies when you’re having fun’ but we reckon it flies regardless of whether you’re having fun or not.

What has brought on this highly profound statement I hear you ask? Well, we just discovered that Universal Works is turning 15 this year.

That’s right, 15, nearly old enough to get a moped license or open a bank account.

Unlike most 15-year-olds though, Universal Works isn’t pooling all its resources into acquiring a few tins of lager to sit in a park with, instead they’ve gone for the much more mature option of launching a project, titled the Bakers Jacket Project.

The Bakers Jacket Project invites artists to create a one-of-a-kind custom edition of the perennial Universal Works item. Since the brand’s conception, the Bakers Jacket has made a cameo in every single collection – it is the quintessential Universal Works product, a true stalwart.

The first collaboration of the project is with Kojo Marfo, a Ghanaian artist based in South London, who has channelled traditional Aken artefacts, sculptures and carvings he saw growing up into his hand-painted rendition of the jacket.

Kojo is a longstanding mate of Universal Works and for that reason, the ideal candidate to kickstart the project, besides being a lovely piece of outerwear, Kojo’s work, titled ‘The Rising Sun’ aims to highlight social issues and showcase the beauty of Africa’s social and geographical fabric.

Universal Works are hosting an exhibition event to showcase Kojo’s Bakers Jacket as well as Universal Works prints and t-shirts at their Coal Drops Yard store on the 5th of December, if you find yourself down that neck of the woods at that time, you’d be silly not to attend.

All proceeds from the exhibition are to be donated to New Horizon Youth Centre, a charity that works with young Londoners who find themselves homeless.
