Few things better than when a footwear brand reaches into the vault and does a bit of tinkering to resurrect a classic silhouette, is there?
Rhetorical question, there aren’t.
We’re pretty excited, therefore, for the recent revival of a super saucy Saucony trainer, originally birthed in 1978 – the Trainer 80.
This phoenix from the ashes moment stems from the brand’s partnership with two London-based communities that rightfully place culture on a pedestal above all else, cult radio station and community hub, Balamii and pillars of community running, Your Friendly Runners.
It makes sense then, that the new Trainer 80 looks equally equipped for an early-morning shuffle around a running track as it does for a late-night shuffle in someone’s kitchen with the sounds of Balamii blasting in the background.
Just as it was in the ’70s and ’80s, the Trainer 80 is fun. Bright colours, interesting sole pattern, and that oh-so-good retro Saucony panelling.
Some things about it have changed though. It’s not the shoe it used to be. It’s better. And that’s because Saucony have ditched the cardboard layer between the sole and upper, placing your foot closer to the foam of the midsole, delivering a softer more responsive feel.
The partnership with both Balamii and Your Friendly Runners seems to be a natural one, we reckon at least, and this is because Saucony’s ‘Run As One’ mantra, initially introduced to promote diversity in the world of running, resonates soundly with both.
Although each of the groups has different creative expressions at their core, they both share many broader interests and values, namely promoting engagement from all types of different communities in their specific niches.
So yeah, we’re welcoming back a nicely refreshed Trainer 80 that supports two creative groups and looks well nice. Good job Saucony.
The Trainer 80 is available to purchase now from select retailers, or directly from Saucony.
