Heritage can be over-used by brands in their storytelling these days, but that’s an accusation nobody could level at New Balance, especially regarding their Made in UK releases. The word heritage is perfectly fitting for this premium tier of New Balance footwear.
When thinking about footwear brands and their manufacturing practices, some will talk about Far East factories in a negative way, pointing to lower labour costs, but the reality is the level of expertise in that part of the world is pretty much unrivalled in the West. It’s the best place to make the best footwear. That is, unless you find yourself in Flimby.
Flimby doesn’t just churn out shoes; it’s a haven for New Balance’s most beloved silhouettes, crafted by generations of dedicated factory workers, some of whom have families that have been part of the production line for decades. This rich heritage (that word, again) and ongoing legacy allow New Balance to continuously draw from a deep well of design history, producing fresh, highly coveted releases year after year.
New Balance don’t have to do this, but they recognise the value in remaining true to their lineage as well as keeping a tradition alive in a relatively remote part of England, where making shoes is more than just a job.
When you buy their Made in UK range, you’re not just buying quality and comfort, you’re buying a slice of the past and propelling it forwards to the modern day. If New Balance value that, we should too.
