Vans and music go hand in hand, and we’re not talking about the ones with four wheels that blast Capital Xtra outside of job sites – obviously, we’re on about the ones for your feet.
The love affair between Vans and all genres of musicians (though mostly rock) began shortly after the Style 36 – aka the Old Skool™ – was first released in 1977. The model was the second skate shoe the company ever produced, and all importantly, the first to feature the iconic Sidestripe™.
The Sidestripe™ would go on to become the most notable visual feature of a pair of Vans and an intrinsic part of why the brand became so popular. If a musician was wearing a pair of Style 36 on stage, thanks to that iconic stripe, it wouldn’t take you long to identify them.
Since 1977 countless famous musicians have rocked a pair of the waffle-soled shoes and countless models have been released since, and it just so happens that Vans have announced another batch that directly pays homage to their melodic entanglement
The collection is aptly titled the Premium Old Skool Music Collection, which sees the brand release three unique capsules inspired by the Old Skool in different eras and genres of music.
The first drop of the collection features a bold leopard print that represents the original colourways adopted by early punk and hardcore musicians in the ’70s and ’80s. The second capsule inspired by the Warped Tour pops with checkerboard patterns and flame prints reminiscent of that #Y2K spirit. The final drop sees the Old Skool’s upper dowsed in vibrant paint jobs atop of gum soles, referencing the adoption of the shoe with the hip-hop scene.
There’s most certainly something for every person and every sound. It feels very Vans and we’re into it for that reason.
The Premium Old Skool Music Collection is set to drop monthly beginning February 6 at Vans retail locations and at Vans.
