Umbro is one of those brands that has football in its veins. Despite the increased interest around the game this last few decades, Umbro for me still retains the crown as the best football brand, certainly in the clothing stakes.
Founded in a pub in Mobberley, Cheshire over a century ago, the brand takes its name from the Humphrey Brothers, shortened to Umbro.
Being a stone’s throw from Manchester led to the city becoming a base for the brand over the years, something they’re happy to keep at the forefront. The recent nod to its city is in their Northern Quarter collection, celebrating the area of the city that has an independent spirit at its core.
The range takes the best bits of Umbro’s ‘90s heyday and gives them a fresh rinse through a filter of that whole blokecore thing, Y2K nostalgia and proper streetwear sensibilities. It’s nostalgic without being naff, trend-aware without trying too hard. And with this summer seeing the return of a couple of musical brothers, one of whom famously wore a lot of Umbro, it won’t be a surprise to see Umbro enjoy some time in the sun, along with thousands of other outdoor gig-goers.
