The ‘match made in heaven collaboration‘ is a played-out trope. But if you ask us sometimes, they really do just feel right. But when they do, they’re a bit special, and the latest collaboration between Gramicci & KEEN is most definitely a bit special.
The two brands have come together to work their magic on one of the all-time sandals, KEEN’s Newport.
If you’re not already familiar with the Newport, you obviously don’t spend enough time enjoying yourself outdoors, but alas, it’s the one that started it all for the Portland-based brand. Originally dreamt up in the late ’90s by Martin Keen – a designer and sailor who needed something tough enough for life on deck but breathable enough for hot days. It’s a silhouette that’s stood the test of time. Rugged, dependable, and with a definite utilitarian sentiment. It’s the kind of footwear your Dad takes an immediate interest in. Think of it as the outdoor world’s answer to the Swiss Army knife.
This time around though, there’s an additional element to hold your dad’s interest. The Newport has been made out of hemp. ‘Isn’t that the cannabis material?’ No, Dad. Well, yes. Sort of…
Hemp is a strong, breathable, naturally antibacterial fibre, and it’s far more sustainable than most things out there. In other words, ideal for a sandal built for trails, rivers, and everything in between. But yes, it is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species. And no, it doesn’t get you high. It’s worth noting also that Gramicci & KEEN have succeeded in an area other hemp brands have failed…
They’ve resisted the all-over weed leaf print. Thankfully.
Where the last collaboration focused on the Jasper in hairy suede, the Newport is a bit more stripped-back and a bit more subtle. It’s made for those summer days where anything could happen – whether that’s a spontaneous hike, impromptu cold plunge, or a simple waltz down to the park accompanied by a selection of exotic alcoholic beverages purchased from the nearest European supermarket.
There’s a logic to this collab that just works. Gramicci’s heritage in climbing and functional design meets KEEN’s reputation for making gear that’s as hard-wearing as it is comfortable.
