Certain garments are a bit more smug than others. Not entirely sure why or how, but some types of clothing feel like they’d look down their noses at others. Let us explain…
Socks – not smug in the slightest. Knitwear – relatively smug. Gilets – incredibly smug – almost too smug. We really wish we could better put this phenomenon into words, but the truth is, we can’t. Some garments are just a bit more pompous than others…
As you traverse along this spectrum of smugness, you’ll find types of clothing that have exatly the right amount of arrogance, and collared shirts made from techy fabric are definitely aligned there. They’re understated and casual. Smart and functional. Can be dressed up, or down. And are generally a very nice item of clothing to have in your wardrobe.
These optimal smugness levels can probably be attributed to the fact that a technical shirt is just at home in the Amazon Rainforest as they are the Bricklayers Arms beer garden – they’re highly adaptable garments, suitable for every environment and every occasion.
In celebration of the garment with goldilocks-appealing levels of smugness, we’ve put together a list of our seven favourite technical shirts, from our pals over at SEVEN STORE.

If the combination of words, and Wander and Multi Pocket, don’t make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, you need medically inspecting. This is what technical shirting is all about – lightweight hardwearing fabric, loads of pockets, a weird carabiner thing on a string and plenty of buttons.
Hiking Patrol Technical Long Sleeve Shirt
Here we have a more understated take on the technical shirt – a sleeper build if you will. Don’t be fooled, though, this Hiking Patrol shirt is very much still techy – it’s got taped seams, a two-way zip and even a point collar – whatever that is.

Purple Mountain Observatory Field Shirt
Our friends at Purple Mountain Observatory certainly know their way around the optimally arrogant garment. If you look closely at this lovely shirt, you’ll notice there are actually three diagonal zipped pockets, two on the left, and one on the right. All of which will be great for putting stuff in.
Universal Works Tech Overshirt
Although heralded for their classic & traditional fabrics, Universal Works aren’t shy to get stuck into some more technical business, as exemplified by this Tech Overshirt. Looks a bit like something Harrison Ford would wear while venturing through the tropics.

Stone Island Tela Paracadute Overshirt
Technical shirts weren’t even a thing before Massimo Osti. Okay, maybe they were, but they definitely weren’t as popular. Fortunately, the lads over at Stone Island have picked up right where the big man left off, and are producing loads of beautiful shirting each season, like this Paracadute (no clue what that is) Overshirt.
Purple Mountain Observatory Climate Overshirt Jacket
Can’t quite decide whether this Purple Mountain Observatory number is an overshirt or a jacket. Perhaps it’s both, like the name suggests. Either way, it looks mega and has pouches that would make a kangaroo jealous.
