Few films are better (or longer) than Michael Cimino’s 1978 Vietnam War epic, The Deer Hunter. And simply calling it a film is selling Cimino’s work short – The Deer Hunter is a life-changing experience. Provided you don’t fall asleep during the hour-long wedding scene…
One of the reasons we believe The Deer Hunter is so highly regarded is its remarkable sense of authenticity. The casting, locations, plot, and characters feel so genuine that watching the film feels less like engaging with fiction and more like witnessing a documentary. When Frank Sinatra & cigarette smoke drift through the bar, the camaraderie is tangible. When the characters leave for Vietnam, the mood turns unmistakably sombre. And no matter how many times you’ve seen it, you’ll still wince at every round of Russian Roulette. The Deer Hunter is, without a doubt, one of the most unforgettable films of all time.
And aside from showcasing one of De Niro’s finest performances, some of Hollywood’s most compelling character development, and a top-tier musical score, The Deer Hunter also delivers some of the most memorable Americana outfitting ever put on screen. Tartan shirts layered over thermals. Trucker caps. Padded down vests. Knitwear. Weathered denim. And of course, the unforgettable bright orange Sierra Designs (Or Holubar – the mystery still stands) 60/40 mountain parka. Watching The Deer Hunter will have you raiding every vintage store within a 10-mile radius, scrambling to layer white tees with the most worn-in flannel shirt you can find in your dad’s wardrobe. The film is truly an education in Americana.
We’ve been meaning to put together a style guide to The Deer Hunter for ages, and we’ve finally done it. Below, you’ll find everything you need to recreate the film’s timeless Steel Belt uniforms – without having to endure another three-hour emotional pummelling.

To this day, no one has pulled off a short beanie as effortlessly as De Niro did in The Deer Hunter. That slightly jaunty angle. The way his mop of hair sweeps beneath it. Okay, we’re getting a bit excited. Anyway, this King Jammy knit beanie looks almost entirely screen accurate, and cosy as anything.
As far as we know, no one actually wore a balaclava during the film, but this Found Feather one is too fitting to leave out.
Crescent Down Works – North by Northwest Vest
Almost everything Crescent Down Works make looks like it could’ve been plucked from the set of The Deer Hunter, but this beautiful down vest is maybe the most accurate of all. Unmistakable ’70s styling (and colour), huge pockets and plenty of 700FP down. This might be even nicer than the actual down vest that De Niro wore on screen.

Pendleton – Big Pocket Check Shirt
Almost every character in the film appears in a flannel at some point. Usually layered with a thermal underneath, to counter that chilling Pennsylvanian breeze. The check on this Pendleton shirt is true to form, and its double-pocketed construction and 100% cotton make-up are too.
The ultimate question: Was De Niro’s Mountain Parka Holubar, or Sierra Designs? We may never know, and to avoid weighing in on such a controversial debate, we’ve opted for a totally different brand altogether – Nanga. The Japanese outerwear maestros have stayed true to the vision of the classic mountain parka, and added some nice contemporary touches, including more pockets and a flame-retardant fabric. Top top marks.

Edwin – Kurabo Loose Fit Denim
Michael Cimino understood that denim isn’t just clothing for blue-collar steelworkers – it’s a uniform. So, naturally, The Deer Hunter is packed with the stuff. The pair that sticks with us is Christopher Walken’s: straight and rugged, in a rich blue wash that feels remarkably close to this Edwin pair.
New Balance – Rainier Mid Boots
We never get a clear look at the footwear in The Deer Hunter, but if we were scrambling around Pennsylvania’s highlands, we’d want New Balance Rainier boots on foot: dependable, rugged, and perfectly in tune with the mountainous terrain.
Few silhouettes are as iconic as the Danner Light. Tough enough for the steel mill, comfy enough for a stroll to the jukebox, and agile enough for a day’s hunting.

Big Rock Candy Mountaineering – Bridalveil Jacket
We’d be willing to bet that The Deer Hunter is one of Big Rock Candy Mountaineering’s favourite flicks, too. This Down Shirt absolutely oozes ’70s Americana.
Double RL – Oil Cloth Ball Cap
When it comes to Americana-influenced headwear, you can’t get much better than RRL. Unfortunately, they don’t make a ‘MACK’ branded one like De Niro wears, but this Oil Cloth cap is the next best thing.
Double RL – Logo Patch Denim Trucker Cap
This was too good to leave out.

Crescent Down Works – Dry Wax Cotton Hooded Sweatshirt
If you look at the on-set photos from The Deer Hunter, you’ll see Michael Cimino himself wearing a down jacket almost identical to this beautiful Crescent Down Works one. Absolutely sensational (especially those leather toggle things).
