Bagels versus ramen. Yellow cabs versus bullet trains. Noise versus neon – on paper, New York City and Tokyo are two very different cities. But look beyond the obvious culinary and sensory differences, and you’ll find there’s an undeniable mutual respect between the two capitals.
Japan has always been fascinated by Americana, and, similarly, America has always been fascinated by Japan’s attention to detail. Both NYC and Tokyo are hubs for those respective obsessions, which makes the recent collaboration between New York workwear institution SPIEWAK and Japanese label EDWIN feel like a particularly natural meeting of worlds. Even though they probably eat very different things for lunch.
For AW26, the two brands bring their respective histories together around a shared appreciation for clothing that is built to do a job. The result is a compact collection, but one that packs a serious punch.
The heaviest hitter of the release is undoubtedly the N-3B Snorkel Parka, a heavyweight piece of military outerwear originally developed to protect U.S. servicemen from subzero temperatures. SPIEWAK takes that utilitarian blueprint and brings it firmly into the present, retaining the substantial construction, generous silhouette and unmistakable fur-trimmed hood that made the N-3B such an enduring cold-weather classic.
It’s big. It’s warm. And in our eyes, it’s absolutely beautiful. The kind of coat you build your entire winter wardrobe around – and end up having a very emotional farewell with once spring rolls around.
Alongside the N-3B, the collection revisits SPIEWAK’s N-1 Deck Jacket in heavyweight cotton jungle cloth, while EDWIN contributes its Made in Japan Loose Fit in 13.5oz Kaihara Pure Indigo Selvedge denim. Available in a clean rinse and a repaired dark wash, the jeans bring EDWIN’s meticulous approach to fabric and finishing into the mix.
Branding across the release remains deliberately restrained. A co-branded patch, SPIEWAK’s signature yellow stitching and woven sleeve labels provide subtle markers of the collaboration, while the N-1 Deck Jacket features a specially developed Rising Sun graphic combining both brands.
EDWIN and SPIEWAK might hail from opposite sides of the globe, but this collaboration is proof that there’s a lot of shared ground between New York City and Tokyo. Two cities, two very different lunches, and one very good parka.
The EDWIN & SPIEWAK collaboration launches at spiewakoriginal.com on September 29th.
