Comme Des Garçons Homme X New Balance CT300 is a lesson in co-branding.
The Comme universe is huge and expansive, with subdivisions galore. The Homme menswear variation – taken from the French word for man – was launched in 1978 with Rei Kawakubo’s protegé Junya Watanabe at the helm.
Homme became an area where the experimental and often dark world of CDG could refract through a cleaner and stricter menswear world, while continuing to practice Kawakubo’s favourite pastime: disruption.
With the Comme Des Garçons Homme X New Balance CT300, a collaborative release for SS22, the pair play it safe with subtle and bold branding. The silhouette features the iconic ‘N’ on the sides and a ‘CdGH’ on the back.
It’s a simple shoe that basks in the joint strength of co-branding.
