Are trainers the new works of art? If you’ve been to any of the Spezial exhibitions recently then you’d be forgiven for thinking so and hot on the heels of that visual treat comes another by way of Made by you from Converse. The ethos behind this story is all about self-expression and the journey each pair of Chucks goes on, starting off as a box-fresh blank canvas and evolving into a well-worn self portrait of the wearer. This worldwide celebration of their legendary Chucks arrives via a collection of All Star portraits: “showcasing endless diversity and self-expression of individuals past and present who choose to wear Chuck Taylor All Star – from musicians to artists, skaters to fashionistas, the known to the unknown. Their portraits offer a contemporary lens into the distinctly unique worlds they inhabit.”
Expect to see portraits from an ‘all star’ cast of Patti Smith, Andy Warhol, Futura, Jefferson Hack, Sayo Yoshida, Kate Lanphear and Glenn O’Brien. Who will be rubbing shoulders with portraits from British Converse designers Sean frank and Sam Taylor as well as everyday wearers just like you and I, turning the streets of New York to Shanghai to Rio into galleries. There’s also a series of six world stories on films to demonstrate how fans wear their Chucks in day to day life. Starting with US actress/zombie Joanna DeLane and British rocker Lewis Hughes-Batley.
