Proper Picks: Gear of the Week 6th-13th May

It’s getting increasingly tough to write something half-decent in this section when everyone knows the premise of this entire article. This week it’s not because spring is coming, it’s not because you need new gear this particular week, it’s just a list of mint things that you should consider buying just because. This week it’s full of Stone Island (shock), those mad Tom Sachs Nike trainers that look like hoover bags, Novesta, Armor Lux and loads more.

It’s a truly exciting time to be very into menswear and looking good, and an even more exciting time to spend all your money on it.

Supreme x Stone Island Camo Cargo Vest
£500+, PresentedBy

Utility vests aren’t something we thought would really take off a few years back, but how wrong were we?! Stick a Stone Island badge and a Supreme logo onto one and it’s gold dust. They actually look pretty mint too, unless you’re short and chubby like me. Woe is me.
Novesta Chelsea Boot
€89.00, Novesta

A bit different from famous Slovakian makers of old school running shoes and those sturdy canvas pumps Novesta, who have re-stocked their rubber vegan-friendly Chelsea Boots just in time for the festival season. Alternatively, even if you aren’t going to a festival, these are excellent footwear for fishermen, cockle picking or when you’re up in the club and don’t want to get sticky ankles.
Armor-Lux Breton Tee
£49.00, END Clothing

We’ve run out of superlatives to describe Armor-Lux to be honest, they’re one of the most consistent brands on the planet in terms of making excellent, good-looking gear on a regular basis. Known for their traditional Breton tees, their short sleeved modernized versions are just as nice and perfect for summer.

Universal Works x Birkenstock
£95.00, Universal Works

Our mates at Universal Works have teamed up with Birkenstock to bring us a modern adaptation of the classic Boston and Zürich silhouettes. With an adjustable strap, metal pin buckle and tonal suede uppers, they’re the ideal footwear for anything you’re doing this summer. Whether wandering the beaches of Northern Morrocco in search of the somewhere that does Heinz Baked Beans, or paired with your comfy white socks as you trudge to the shop on a Sunday hangover, they’ll have you covered.
And Wander Pertex Wind Pull Over
£298.00, Oi Polloi

And Wander bring us the ideal summer pullover. Not only is it made from low-profile ripstop that’s one of the lightest materials we’ve ever held, this Pertex Wind Pull Over is also packable for when the sun reappears. Lightweight, breathable and bloody nice. What more do you need?
New Balance 990v5
£180.00, New Balance

The Dad Shoe might be a bit Hypekid 2018©, yet New Balance’s 990 silhouette – the king of the Dad Shoe, the OG Dad Shoe – is one trainer that simply won’t budge – and it’s for good reason too. We wrote about it here.
Tom Sachs x Nike Mars Yard Overshow
£390+, Laced.co.uk

Sneakers that look like fashionable hoover bags going for a lot of money? That’s what we’re into now. It’s modern streetwear, get used to it. Its nickname is the March Yard — for March, the worst month of the year. It is wet, your feet are wet the whole month of March,” says Tom Sachs himself. These will be hard to get your hands on, but Laced has you covered.
Reebok Club C
£64.95, Reebok

There are very few sneakers that are held in such high regard by sneaker heads all over the globe. The fact I even call them sneakers shows how global they are, because in fact they’re called trainers. Everyone knows that. I’m of course talking about the Reebok Club C that’s back for SS19. Buy them. Wear them. And buy them again.
Aime Leon Dore x New Balance
€260.00, Aime Leon Dore

While this collab between Aime Leon Dore and New Balance has been out for a few weeks now, the fact some of it’s still available proved a little weird to us so we wanted to bring it to your attention once again. The colours, the cut, the neat logo on the left breast. Into it.
Clarks Originals Pale Yellow Wallabees
£110.00, Clarks Originals

No round-up is ever complete without including some of the latest drops from everyone’s favourite west country shoe makers Clarks. Their Pale Yellow Wallabees scream summer shoes with shorts, and will then be ready to dye in the winter because you ruined them having such good fun in the summer. I don’t make the rules.

Snow Peak Quick Dry Soft Shirt
£184.00, Oi Polloi

Lightweight, stylish and very Italian mobster, this short-sleeved beauty from Snow Peak has us thinking of beers and beaches. Worn alone or with a white tee underneath, it’s all about comfort with this one and the clue’s in the name.

Crew Rugby Shirt
£59.00, Crew Clothing

We’ve said before that we aren’t into rugby, but we are into rugby shirts. While we have made our own (buy them here), man like Crew Clothing have been making simple, yet effective rugby shirts for years and have inspired many. This navy classic is iconic and has made a comeback for 2019 – you don’t hear us complaining.

Absolutely well into house plants.
