Universal Works Three Button Jacket is a Sophisticated Trip to the 50s

The Three Button Jacket from Universal Works channels the casual fit of a 1950s sport coat and laidback Japanese elegance.

In spring 2021, David Keyte – the founder of Universal Works – ruminated over a piece he found in a thrift store in Japan: “The cut was based on this great 1950s ‘sports coat’ I found in a thrift shop in Koenji, Japan. The sizing was generous (that was the trend back then) but perfect for today’s silhouette. With a few adjustments to the pattern on the sleeves and shoulder, and some tweaks to the overall fit, we were in business.”

That moment gave birth to now-infamous Three Button Jacket, a casual jacket that dresses up as a blazer and down with jeans.

And that’s the thing – there’s this timeless 1950s smartness to it. It throws back to the era when people really got dressed, when you didn’t need a reason to look kempt. It’s confident and affirmative.

For SS22, the piece is available in Charcoal Tropical Lux suiting, Navy Cotton Linen suiting and Navy Italian herringbone, where the mid-to-lightweight jackets speak of an effortless aesthetic with a natural softness around the shoulders.
