KangaROOS sneakers will elicit nostalgic memories of all-American sports stars for those of a certain vintage. Well, the ‘shoes with a pocket’ have been experiencing something of a quiet renaissance over the last few years. Pursuing a three-pronged route back into popular culture, ‘ROOS have relaunched a number of classic silhouettes through seasonal collections, become prolific collaborators, and produced a premium ‘Made in Germany’ range of hand-crafted shoes. It’s a triad strategy that doesn’t try too hard and, as a result, the brand’s second coming has been a bit of a one for those ‘in the know’.
That may be set to change, however, with a SS22 drop that promises to be a bit more high profile. Recognisable silhouettes such as the COIL R1 OG return in combination of suede, mesh and reflective PU, and will provoke warm feelings of nostalgia, or a nod of appreciation for retro done right, depending on your age. The AUSSIE MICRO CORD has been a frontrunner of the last couple of seasons and shows an astute understanding of the new world into which KangaROOS have re-emerged – lots of corduroy and mesh and no animal skin whatsoever. The RALLY TRAIL is the out-and-out newcomer with a sophisticated upper combination of suede and nylon, signalling an intention to look forward, as well as back.
