Monokel Make Biodegradable Sunglasses from Stockholm

Stockholm’s Monokel handcraft their frames from organic, biodegradable acetate.

Monokel is the creation of Robert Sandgren and Fredrik Sävenberg, two Swedish skate and snowboard enthusiasts who decided to turn their attention to the eyewear game.

The pair brought their Scandi approach and heritage with them, fusing sleek style with ecological imperative.

All of Monokel’s frames are handcrafted from organic and fully biodegradable acetate. As a foundation for continuous improvement, third party lab tests and factory audits are conducted with each production run.

When the brand launched in AW13, the brand used recycled acetate. Since AW20, every Monokel Eyewear design has been made using biodegradable acetate material. The most obvious advantage of this is that the glasses will eventually decompose rather than end up in landfills or as microplastics in the oceans.

In Monokel’s words: “We have always highlighted the importance of a long product life cycle. But there’s a limit to everything. Our glasses are still made to last, but not forever.”
