New Adidas silhouette at Aphrodite

The Torsion Super is a slick retro runner.

Time for a quick history lesson.

In 1988 Adidas came out with the Torsion System technology. Meant for running shoes it provided more support and comfort than any other shoe on the market. The Torsion technology is essentially a bridge between the forefoot and rearfoot. The added support in the midfoot provides a step that rolls off easier when running or walking. The aesthetic of the Torsion sole is characterised by a ‘bridge’ in the midsole made of TPU-materials.

In 2023 Adidas have added a new shoe to their roster. It utilises this same technology but seemingly with a purpose that is less performace focussed. The Torsion Super is a retro runner lifestyle shoe. The colourways lean into this nature as they look like they could’ve been picked straight out of the Adi archive. There’s distinct echoes of the look of the iconic ZX series.

With classic three stripe shapes resurfacing into the mainstream once again, it’ll be interesting to see whether more niche technologies and styles like these will also be picked up by the masses.
