Outlaw Swords of Death (Warrior & Hero Designs 1825-45 by Kuniyoshi)

Layout 1Though this book title sounds like a Depth Charge single it’s actually a collection of hardcore Japanese prints from nineteenth century artist and master of the ukiyo-e genre, Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Not surprisingly these colourful and katana wielding characters went on to become firm favourites as tattoos for two of the hardest sections of Japanese society, namely the Yakuza and fire-fighters (yes firefighters).  So the next time you hear someone harping on about getting their next really cool, edgy, hard-as-fuck tattoo, tell them to get some Kuniyoshi warriors on their back/arm/face or just forget about it.
