“Zoltar was born a bastard child of acid house and punk rock. A molotov cocktail of art, film and clothing. One Part social comment and One part sartorial excellence…..Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” Dan Macmillan, Project Zoltar. Can’t really argue with that can you? To be honest whatever I write about this zany Zoltar book will not do the imagery inside any justice at all. Suffice to say you can expect a ketaminesque and kaleidoscopic collection of tens years of eccentric London guerrilla art and street fashion compressed into a cardinal silk bound, gold embossed book that looks like the kind of thing Sinbad or Aladdin would use to write their memoirs in. Project Zoltar started life off as a shop in Soho then as a launch pad for their highly acclaimed international fashion label and artist collective. With the full approval of Brit art legends Jake & Dino Chapman (who’ve written the intro) they’ve also produced some impressive collaborations over the past decade, including a major commission by Nike as well as hooking up with Bella Freud and Anita Pallenberg. Impeccable credentials aside please be warned, once you pick up this unique book and open it’s golden pages, neither your eyes or your life are likely to be the same again. Magnificent indeed.
