It’s been quite a year for us here at Proper with the many tentacles of our agency having reached out to all manner of exciting people and projects. From covering trainer conventions in Tokyo to creating a souvenir programme for the biggest outdoor gig of the year. To be honest we’ve been so busy that I’ve forgotten half of the things that we’ve done so I’ve decided to remind myself by listing them all here.
Oh and if you fancy commissiong us to do some PR, manage you social media, create a bespoke publication, do a photo or video shoot, tell you what we think of your brand, sort out your SEO, collaborate with Hikerdelic, make a podcast or get featured in the mag then drop me a line firstname.lastname@example.org
To promote the release of the Bolton and Azrek silhouettes we did a shoot for Reebok on their home turf in Lancashire. Though perhaps not the most glamorous of locations we had a ball doing it, despite some locals insisting the trainers we were shooting outside Bolton bus station were actually theirs.
Not content with making some exclusive coloured cord Star Master together with Novesta we also decided to make a short film about their factory in Slovakia.
2019 has been our second year working together with C.P, Company, predominantly on their global instagram account. Call us biased but they’re still one of the most innovative and incredible brands on the planet. Their tech fabrics, beautiful garment dyeing and uncanny knack for being able to make the perfect jacket show no signs of stopping.
We also put on our stylist caps and created a campaign shoot for Mainline Menswear out on the Yorkshire coast where we had a ball hanging out a modernist house and driving round in a vintage VW Golf.
This year we’ve also been working closely with progressive outdoor brand Haglöfs that includes organising some high profile hiking events. Having helped raise awareness of just what a brilliant brand they you can expect to see big things from these suave Swedes in 2020.
Mid way through the year we were honoured to work with the band Blossoms once more having previously styled the cover of their second album ‘Cool Like You’ the year before. This time around we got to create a souvenir programme for their biggest gig yet, a sell out all day event at Edgeley Park stadium in their hometown of Stockport. With a cover designed by Daren Newman the mag was packed with interviews, support band profiles and spoof adverts for made up chip shops.
Due to popular demand we decided to resurrect our podcasts his year and got a few more of our mates into the Proper studios for a chinwag. So if you want to hear about what it feels like to end up in jail in Turkey or go on a jacket shopping spree in New York in the early 1990s then go have a listen here.
Having been lifelong fans of Berghaus we were overjoyed when they brought back some mind-lateringly ace archive pieces in their Dean Street collection and equally ecstatic when they asked us to create some content around the release. Which is how we ended up filming an interview with ‘The Oracle’ AKA Rich Gill from Bags of Flavor as well as two of our favourite DJs Luke Unabomber and Olli Ryder.
Our brand Hikerdelic has done pretty well this year, with its first ‘proper’ collection appearing in some of the best menswear stores in the world. We also did a collab with one of our favourite ever brands which we’re still trying to get our heads around. The Hikerdelic x Barbour collab featured two genuinely amazing jackets, some ace scarves, a cool af cord bucket hat and a banging bag. Even Liam gallagher got in on the act and bought one of each of us after checking out the film we made to showcase the collection up in the Peak District.
As if making something with Barbour wasn’t life affirming enough we then got to make our own Hikerdelic version of a true design icon the Kickers Kick Hi. Another dream come true in wearable form, we took the shoes out for a walk from ‘Peak to Precinct’ in this short film we made that includes cameos from myself, Mark and designer Daren Newman, see if you can spot us!
To celebrate the Kickers collab launch the Hip Store asked us to do a launch party at their lovely big shop in Leeds. Which we did and invited all our mates along to have a lovely knees up with some Sicilian street food and locally brewed beer.
Pretty Green x Umbro
Fresh from the wheels of steel in Leeds we headed back to Manchester and manned the decks over at the Pretty Green x Umbro launch. Digging deep into the crates the set consisted of lots of indie-dance friendly tunes from the likes of the Fall, New FADs, World of Twist and ACR.
Being the footwear freaks that we are, we were lucky enough to be flown over to AtmosCon in Tokyo to check out the launch of On-Running’s new Cloud Hi Edge shoe. Everything about the trip was amazing from the footwear to the mad quest as to who could find the maddest flavoured kit-kats.
Alongside all of this Proper project work we’ve somehow managed to keep releasing our magazine too. Made with the same ethos as when it started out as a fanzine nearly 20 years ago its still full of stuff that we genuinely love and that you won’t find in any other mags.
The North Face
As well as our own collaborations we also got involved with The North Face and their British Millerain collection and made did some shooting over at the factory in Yorkshire. The film will be out early Jan but here’s a still to whet your outdoor gear loving appetites.
