Went to the England game yesterday, me. Took the kids, I’m not mega fussed on our national team myself (apart from tournaments, because I’m fickle) but having condemned the pair of them to a lifetime of lower league disappointment I felt I owed it to them to see a team string more than 8 passes together in a ground that had a big HD telly in the corner.
There were quite a few things which impressed me. Firstly, I’m going to have to reluctantly admit City’s ground is sort of ok. Their chips, even at £3 are a real boon. And the Turks made a decent racket.
Aside from that though, it was all a bit market town day out. What I mean is if grown men wearing facepaint and jeans they’ve borrowed off someone two sizes bigger is your bag, you’d have a smashing time. Likewise, if you’re a greasy-haired virgin from Huddersfax and you’ve raided the casual dressing up box, you’ll feel very much at home. Don’t get me wrong, I’m hardly a paragon of cool. I’m just saying it was all a bit lowest common denominator. It just was. The announcer even told us the score at half time and full time, just in case we’d not been paying attention.
I’ll probably do the odd England game in the future. The opening game against Russia will almost certainly be viewed with lots of Scousers at Laces Out. I’ll be the one wearing a pretentious Japanese take on the M65 jacket, sneering at people because they were born in a town where they call bread something nobody can quite understand.
Reckon I’ll wear one of these anyway, and I’ll feel smug as a bug in a rug.
