Six of the Best – Summertime Sporting Classics

Founded way back in 1952, the Sporting Lodge has always had roots in quality outdoor lifestyle gear- classic clothing for those whose estate is country rather than council. As the world continues to turn and tastes evolve, the lines have become blurred and there’s an increasing amount of crossover. Think Filson, Barbour, RRL… all brands that have an element of luxury about them, yet they can easily translate into a more urban, everyday setting.

As the Sporting Lodge has evolved, a new website has recently arrived, making now a good time to pop over for a look. Here’s some items we reckon work whether you’re negotiating a National Trust property or enjoying top tapas in town.

Lacoste Polo Shirt
This classic fit, cotton beauty is the archetypal wardrobe staple. No selection of men’s clothing is complete without this sort of garment. Though it retains the name ‘polo’, its roots are in tennis but the reality is you’ll wear it to compete in neither. This version is also dyed using natural minerals which gives each piece a unique feel.

Polo Ralph Lauren Graphic Hooded Pullover Jacket
This statement-making contemporary take on a vintage mountain jacket comes in colours that put us in mind of Bebeto, Romario, Rivaldo and Dunga. If you know, you know.

Patagonia Atom Sling Backpack
Not conventionally a sporty item, this backpack perfectly demonstrates the point we’re making. The crossover from outdoor pursuits to everyday living has never been a path more natural. Patagonia excel in climbing, fishing, trekking, and while this bag could be useful in all of those settings, we reckon it’s the sort of thing you’ll take with you to the beach while you do nothing energetic at all.

RRL by Ralph Lauren Southwestern Linen Cap
Make no mistake, RRL is for those with deep pockets and a strong appreciation for premium, vintage Americana. This is a brand that could only come from the bones of Ralph Lauren himself and the Sporting Lodge are one of a tiny number of UK stockists. An extensive range takes in hats, jackets, accessories and more, with both men and women catered for.

Beretta Tri-active EVO Jacket
Let’s not get into whether hunting is a shady pursuit (I mean, it is a bit), let’s instead focus on the fact this is a very, very nice jacket from a brand with generations of Italian heritage.

Gramicci Weather NN Pant
The best slim fit pant from Gramicci is the NN, and this version comes with additional stretchiness. You may not wear these for scaling a mossy wall in the Peak District, but the point is, you could if you wanted to.
